Spain is a long way by road, about 1,500 to 2,500 km from the Channel depending on the destination, so the route matters. Most loads go overland through France, but the direct ferries from the UK to northern Spain avoid a long drive and can be the better option for unaccompanied trailers.
Transit times
| Destination | Full load | Groupage |
|---|---|---|
| Bilbao and the Basque Country | 2–3 days | 4–5 days |
| Barcelona and Catalonia | 3 days | 4–6 days |
| Madrid | 3–4 days | 4–6 days |
| Valencia | 3–4 days | 5–6 days |
| Seville and Andalusia | 4 days | 5–7 days |
Typical times with customs documents ready. French and Spanish driving restrictions, public holidays and ferry schedules can add time.
Overland or direct ferry?
| Route | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Overland via France (Dover or the Channel Tunnel) | Frequent departures, usually quickest for accompanied full loads | A long drive, driver hours and French weekend bans |
| Portsmouth – Santander or Bilbao | Skips France, good for unaccompanied trailers and northern Spain | Fewer sailings, and the crossing takes a day or more |
| Rosslare – Bilbao | Direct link between Ireland and Spain | Mainly for Irish trade |
Customs and Spanish requirements
Goods between Great Britain and Spain need export and import declarations and safety and security data, plus GVMS on the UK side for roll-on roll-off routes. Goods that meet the UK–EU rules of origin travel duty-free with a statement on origin.
The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla
The Canary Islands are part of Spain, but outside the EU VAT area. They have their own indirect tax, IGIC, and their own import formalities. Ceuta and Melilla are outside the EU customs territory. Shipments to these places need different paperwork from mainland Spain, so tell us at the quote stage.
Fresh produce
Fruit and vegetables from Spain to the UK need phytosanitary certificates and pre-notification, and some checks have been postponed while the UK and the EU work on an SPS agreement. Requirements are changing, so check the latest position before the season starts. See our reefer and temperature-controlled service.
Spanish driving restrictions
Spain doesn't have a single nationwide weekend ban like France or Germany. Instead, the traffic authority publishes restrictions for specific roads, dates and holiday periods, along with regional rules in Catalonia and the Basque Country. Loads crossing France also need to plan around the French weekend ban.
