What is a commodity code?

Short answer

A commodity code (based on the international HS system) classifies your goods for customs. It decides the duty rate, any import controls and whether licences are needed. UK codes can be found in the UK Trade Tariff on GOV.UK.

The detail

UK import codes are usually 10 digits and export codes 8 digits.

Using the wrong code can mean paying the wrong duty, delays or penalties, so it's worth getting right from the start.

If you're unsure, we can help you check your codes before shipping.
