What does a freight forwarder do?

Short answer

A freight forwarder organises the movement of your goods from origin to destination. They book space with shipping lines, ferries or hauliers, arrange documents and customs, and coordinate each leg so you have one point of contact instead of many.

The detail

Forwarders don't usually own the ships. They buy space from carriers and combine it with haulage, customs clearance and other services to create a door-to-door solution.

A good forwarder also advises you: which route, port and container to use, how to cut costs, and what to do when something goes wrong. That advice is often where the real value is.
